Local Legend: Daniela Mickits of Czech Out the Rock
"Mother Nature is beautiful. Sometimes, life becomes busy and stressful. Why not wear a piece of nature on a daily basis as a reminder to slow down and breathe? Surrounding myself with nature soothes my soul, and I hope it spreads positive vibes into your life as well. Every single piece is made with lots of love and joy!"

Give us some background on your businesses.
Czech Out the Rock sells handmade flower jewelry so that customers can always carry a bit of nature on them.
Since I was a little girl, I liked wearing unique and different kinds of jewelry. My journey as an artist started when my fiancé and I were in Austin, TX. I was searching for a new crystal necklace, so we went into a rock shop to search for a unique, one of a kind piece. To my surprise, they didn’t have anything. I thought to myself, “how hard can it be to make myself”? I collected a few gemstones and started my research.
From there, I found a new hobby of wire wrapping gemstones. So, that’s how it all started. From there, my creativity led me to different styles and different techniques. I have learned this journey is never ending and always evolving.
Currently, my passion is working with flowers and turning them into art pieces. I love love love flowers and nature. So, being able to turn it into art and share it with people, makes me very happy. Mother Nature is beautiful. Sometimes, life becomes busy and stressful. Why not wear a piece of nature on a daily basis as a reminder to slow down and breathe? Surrounding myself with nature soothes my soul, and I hope it spreads positive vibes into your life as well. Every single piece is made with lots of love and joy!
What is the story and meaning behind why you started your business?
From a hobby of creating jewelry to a full blown business, it is still very hard to believe we have made it to where we are. Originally, I would create jewelry because I always loved very simple and natural things. It was one of the small start up business examples that you hear in stories. I loved creating jewelry, my friends all loved it, so I began to create more and joined many small farmers markets. After about a year of nannying full time and creating jewelry on the side, it came to a point where my creations were able to support myself. From there, I went head first into markets, wholesale, and online sales. We have learned and grown a lot over the past few years, but our typical saying is still, "fake it until you make it."
In what ways has being a business owner positively impacted your life?
Owning my own business is a dream. I never imagined myself being a business owner, and in a lot of ways, I really didn't even mean to create a business! To keep this short, being a business owner allows me to spend more time at home, work on myself and my own personal goals, and travel more than I probably should. Owning a business allows me to create the life that I have always imagined to have.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned about life from owning a business?
When you own your own business, it does not mean you work less. Though I may be "working" more hours, I love what I do. Taking the leap to quit a full time stable job was very hard, but if I would not have done that, I would still be where I was at. Owning a business has created a lot of growth in many aspects of my life and I would never want anything less.
